, harry reid, mitch mcconnell all there. all giving remarks this morning in this tribute to dedicate the statue of rosa parks, a civil rights hero we all remember after giving up her seat or not giving up her seat to a white passenger on a bus that started the boycott of busing and introduced martin luther king to america. we move on now to chuck hagel who's given his speech now this morning as defense secretary. he was sworn in in a private ceremony about 45 minutes ago. he spoke to the service members and employees at the pentagon. hagel said he was honored to be the new defense secretary and that the pentagon does have a tough road ahead of it including dealing with sequestration. >> we need to deal with this reality. we've got ahead of us a lot of challenges. they are going to define much of who we are. not this institution only but our country. >> meantime, we do have major developments on the sequester issue today. the white house is saying that president obama will hold a meeting on friday with top congressional leaders on both sides including speaker boehner, nancy pelosi, ha

what he hopes the senate will do with the sequester. today, it was harry reid's chance to respond. >> speaker boehner made harsh accusations, i'm not going to repeat them here on the senate floor. he thinks the senate isn't moving quickly enough to avert the sequester. the speak's charge is weak sauce, mr. president. >> weak sauce. joining me now is robert gibbs. former white house press secretary to president obama. weak sauce, what do we say about that? >> i think you can see, we are in the -- if you were landing an airplane, we are in the final decent here. i think there seems to be nothing on the horizon that would overt the cuts. the president is not going to move off of the idea that these cuts should be replaced by a balance of entitlements and spending cuts. i see nothing that would demonstrate that republicans are ready to make those cuts more balanced and talk about revenue in addition to spending cuts. i thought the most interesting and colorful quote wasn't speaker boners, but senator ron johnson from wisconsin who said if speaker boehner were to overt the sequester cu

. where is it? i don't see the proposal. i don't see the bill. is harry reid presenting that? >> let's take a look at this la latest polling. rather than emphasizing the country by a five point margin they think obama is focused on unity over partisanship. when we asked whether americans agree with what republicans are proposing to do nearly 6 in 10 disagree with the republicans. nobody is mother teresa here. nobody thinks they're sticking their neck out any further than they have to pop but why do the republicans -- why is your brand of your party so sticky right now. >> because we have messaged this horribly. >> what's the message they're not getting out? >> it's been all over the place. >> what is the right message? >> the right message is to really -- as we should have said from the beginning focus on how to create jobs in the country and tie that to spending. we've not done that. we've not given a way forward that really lays out exactly what the cost is to this economy for the level of spending that we've been doing. >> i'm going back to -- >> can i make one final point? >> sur
